Vampire Mania

Who has not succumbed yet to the Twilight saga books?

I have. I read them all in less than 2 weeks! I was so hooked up I could not stop reading, not even at 4am in the morning.

However, now that they Twilight madness is gone, and we will have to wait for the New Moon movie next summer…what do we read now?

Well, if you are into vampire stories, I’d like to recommend you a few books/TV Shows that might suit you and hook you up as Twilight did.

First, if you have finished reading all the four Twilight books and can’t get enough of Edward and the Cullen family, I would definitely check out the unpublished manuscript of the Twilight version from Edward’s point of view: “Midnight Sun”. It was written by Stephanie Meyer and, even though it was never published, they used it when shooting the movie. What happened? Someone published it online without Stephanie’s consent so she decided not to finish it and it has been posted on her website and although you cannot print it or change format of the file, you can save it on your computer and read it:

http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html

It is quite interesting because, even though it is the same story, it tells you things you did not see when reading Bella’s version.

When I was in the US this summer, they were advertising a TV show called True Blood. I did not get a chance to watch it while I was there and it has not been even shown here on the Spanish TV. The first season has just finished in the US, and if you have US cable, you can watch it on HBO. The TV show is based on Charlaine Harris books, Sookie Stackhouse vampire Stories. Sookie is a waitress from a small town called Bon Temps. Vampires are exposed now, since a Vampire Amendment has been approved and they are protected. A new type of drink, called True Blood, has been launched. It is synthetic blood to avoid vampires’ killing sprees. One day, a vampire shows up for the first time at Sookie’s bar and Sookie and him start to talk….The first book is called “Dead till Dark” check it out!

There is another TV show you might like. It is called Moonlight and the first season is already available on DVD.

And last, but not least…I have not read this yet, I just bought it though. It is called “Touch the Dark” from Karen Chance. Kassandra Palmer can read minds and communicate with the dead. However, a vampire who tried to kill her in the past crosses her path once more… I will let you know if I like it or not.

And of course…the classics! Interview with the vampire and “The Historian”.

Enjoy!

London Shopping Spree!

I'm Back!

After the Odissey trip to London, and after having left all the Portobello Market shops empty...I need a rest! well deserved rest!

I have to say we did not have that much luck. I was used to the chaos of London traffic. However, I wasn't expecting it to fail this saturday. Trains weren't running (and unfortunately, it was our first transport choice down to London from Stansted). A replacement bus service was running to London instead, but it takes two hours! we could not waste that much time if we just had a few hours. So we booked a taxi with a chofer to drive us down to London and pick us up when we had finish. Total price: 230 GBP go and back. It was not that bad, especially because we saved in bus and tube tickets.

We started our shopping spree in Portobello Market, and although I was looking for a fur coat, I did not find the one I exactly wanted, so I ended up buying some other stuff: bags, shoes, a skirt and a baby doll dress for 9.90 GBP! It wasn't bad at all!

I would have loved to have lunch at Wagamama, one of my fav restaurants in London. But because we only were there for 6 hours, (yes, we were there only for the day!) I think I will just leave it for next time!

Who said we were in recession?

Christmas is over, and as many people take out the decoration that we reluctantly set up every year and throw away the tree, the retail industry puts a smile on its face. This year, sales have arrived earlier than expected. Entire families queue in front of their favorite stores, or just the ones that have the best discounts. It does not matter if they find their size, the color or even the clothes they were looking for: it is cheaper, and therefore, they buy it.
However, some stores have kept their sales discounts in the shadows for a bit longer. Inditex has decided not to participate on the early sales campaign that has been promoted in Spain. While we all were making our last minute Christmas shopping as we stepped in crowded stores, Oysho, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and some of their sisters left an image of desolation and emptiness. Not for a long time tho, we just have to wait a bit longer!
I happened to visit a few Zara & Massimo Dutti stores yesterday. Although most people thought that by the time Inditex opened its doors everybody would have already done all their after Christmas shopping, they were wrong. Although most of the items were gone by the time I got to the stores, only big sizes, unpaired shoes and half business suits that were missing either the blazer or the trousers were left. Yet, the queues were never ending. It was impossible to either get in or out. People starting to surrender left their precious achievements on the counters and tables of the store which was seen as an opportunity by desperate buyers to find what they were looking for, or just give another heart attack to their credit cards.
The danger about the after Christmas sale is that we buy what we do not need. Shoes - I don’t need them, but it is a bargain!. We overspend, and the January hill is deeper than ever. Just bear in mind that most of the stores, as I noticed yesterday, are already brining in their new season collections. Be aware that in a month or so, you will be on a spring shopping spree again, and therefore, will create a black hole in your bank account difficult to cover.

What to buy during sales then? The best option would be to go for timeless "achats" such as jeans, basic t-shirts, shirts and, moreover, suits. If you have a size that almost never gets sold out, wait a few days since many stores add further discounts as days go by. A good tip is to not bring your credit card with you: leave it at home. If you normally carry around all your credit and debit cards in your wallet, make sure you just take one with you. It is a good way to put the break on.

These are some clothes and shoes I bought during sales on the past few days:

Shoes: Zara
Ankle boots: H&M
Belt: Accessorize

Skirt: H&M
Handbag: Hazel
